Loch Raven Reservoir supplies water to Baltimore City and Baltimore County, and it is filled by the Big Gunpowder Falls river beginning at the dam of Prettyboy Reservoir. Boats with motors and swimming are prohibited here. However, you can rent or operate rowboats to travel around or to go fishing.

If you don’t want to go on the reservoir, there are also many trails for hiking which have great views of the forest and wildlife in the area, including the largest island: Goose Island. The best time to visit is on the weekend, because Loch Raven drive is closed to traffic between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm from the stretch of road between Providence Road and Loch Raven Drive. This is the most popular time for biking, running, and walking along the reservoir without the fear of cars.
